Esenler is located in the European side of Istanbul. Esenler is one of the biggest districts of Istanbul with more than 450.000 population. It is neighbors with Gaziosmanpaşa in the north, Güngören in the south, Zeytinburnu in the southeast and Bağcılar in the west. Esenler consists of 18 neighborhoods and has a total area of 5.227 hectares. Unlike the surrounding districts, Esenler is a settlement center rather than an industrial center. The oldest inhabitants of this region are Greeks living in the villages established under the names Litros (Esenler) and Avas (Atışalanı). Esenler or Atışalanı Villages were Byzantine villages until the conquest of Istanbul by the Turks in the magnificent periods of Byzantium in ancient times, and they contributed economically to the Byzantine Empire by growing various agricultural products.
